WELCOME

Welcome to The Raffia Kat

After several joyful years of dyeing, coiling, and creating, The Raffia Kat will be closing its material supply later this year. I'm now selling off the last of my naturally hand-dyed Madagascan raffia and emu feathers and using up my remaining dyes for some final batches.

If you’d like raffia or feathers in a specific colour — or are after larger bundles (including 1kg hanks) — please reach out. I’d love to help where I can.

Running this little business from my tiny house in the Dandenong Ranges has been a wonderful learning adventure — but also time-heavy and not financially sustainable. And with a husband and three kids in a 9m x 2.4m space, there’s just not enough room to keep storing bundles of raffia and feathers alongside everything else we need to live. It’s time for me to shift focus: to finally finish building my tiny home (I still don’t have hot running water — or a sink, for that matter!) and to make more room for slower, more personal creative work.

Once the current raffia and feather stock is sold, it won’t be restocked — and the materials section of the website will be closed. While I have stock I’ll continue making kits, earrings, and dyeing for personal projects or requests — just not offering raffia or feathers as a regular item in the shop.

I'll also keep sharing tutorials and ideas on YouTube, and I'm always happy to offer a bit of guidance or inspiration when I can.

With coils of gratitude,
Kat x

Averil's Stunning Mariposa-Stitched Raffia Art

This beautiful, knotted raffia piece, stitched in the Mariposa style, was lovingly created by Averil — a past maker I had the joy of meeting at one of my library weaving workshops. I’m absolutely thrilled to now feature her gorgeous creation here on the website.

What amazing work, Averil!

Got something you’d like to share? Upload your own raffia creation to the Crafter’s Gallery — I’d love to see what you’ve made!

The Serpent's Keep...

In the heart of the forest, where ferns unfurl like spells and every rustle carries a secret, a serpent rests—coiled not in menace, but in protection. This hanging basket is its form and its sanctuary. Woven by The Raffia Kat using hand-dyed Madagascan raffia coloured with chlorophyll, walnuts, and cutch, it hums with quiet power. Serpentine beads glint like scales; bells chime softly like leaf-whispers; copper sings of earth’s warmth. A sigil carved in wood lies beneath a fern frond, reading: I am safe in the forest. This is a vessel of refuge, created to hold not just plants, but possibility.

The snake watches—not as a threat, but as a guardian of the curious, the different, the brave. This is a spell for those who dare to weave their own paths, who bloom sideways, who speak in textures and colour instead of words. Here, you are safe to be odd, to begin before you’re ready, to change your mind, to make it up as you go. This is a forest sanctuary, not only for the green and growing, but for the wild imaginings we’re so often taught to hide. In this basket, there is no wrong way to be.

You are safe in the forest.
